Winter Tires are built with a special type of rubber compound that responds better to cold temperatures than All-Season tires can. The compound found in winter tires has more silica which helps them stay supple even in -40º C temperatures. Because of this, winter tires will have much better traction on cold, hard, and even snow-covered pavement than All-Season tires. All-Season tires are a less suitable choice for drivers in climates like Southern Ontario, as their compounds start to get harder and grip less at temperatures below 7º C.
Another unique reason winter tires are different from All-Season tires are the tire tread patterns. Winter tires are built with more aggressive tread patterns that are designed to increase grip and improve traction. Usually, tread on winter tires will have small features that make big differences, like biting edges, which create better traction on ice and snow.
Always install tires of the same type, size, speed rating and load index on all four wheels; This will improve vehicle handling and safety.
Look for the 3-Peaked Mountain Snowflake Symbol on tires; This pictograph identifies tires that offer enhanced capability in winter conditions.
Maintain proper air pressure; Air pressure inside the tire fluctuates with the weather, especially in spring and fall where temperatures rise and fall quickly in southern Ontario. Proper air pressure will extend the life of your tire, improve safety, and even save you gas.
